Since 30 July 2015 the network has produced a block roughly every twelve seconds — through a $150M contract hack, a denial-of-service campaign, the worst congestion in its history, and a live switch from proof of work to proof of stake. No halt. No maintenance window. This page checks that claim against live nodes, every twelve seconds.

Ethereum incident history

  1. Block 1 The chain starts with a handful of people running software on laptops. No SLA, no status page, no one to call. Chain live
  2. The DAO An attacker drained roughly a third of a $150M contract. The community split over whether to reverse it, and did, creating two chains. Fiercely contested, and it settled at the social layer rather than by stopping. Chain live throughout
  3. Sep–Oct 2016 Shanghai DoS attacks Weeks of spam transactions exploiting cheap opcodes. Nodes crawled, some crashed, gas limits dropped hard. Emergency releases shipped in days while blocks kept coming. Degraded, never halted
  4. Parity multisig freeze A user deleted a library contract and locked around 500,000 ETH in wallets, permanently. Painful, expensive, and entirely a contract-level failure. The network itself never noticed. Chain live

What people mean when they say Ethereum is down.

Three different things get called “Ethereum is down”, and only one of them would show up on this page. It has never happened.

Never down

The network itself

Mainnet consensus — the thing that orders transactions and produces blocks. Thousands of nodes run nine independent client codebases in dozens of countries. This is the only layer this page measures, and it has never stopped.

Layer 2 rollups halt: Starknet stopped for over four hours in January 2025 and around nine hours that September; Base halted block production for roughly two hours in June 2026. Arbitrum and Optimism have had sequencer stalls of their own. A rollup halting is not mainnet halting — mainnet kept producing blocks through every one of them.

Your route to it

RPC providers, wallets, front ends and exchanges. When Infura went down in November 2020, MetaMask and much of the ecosystem went with it, and the chain never noticed. If your wallet shows an error, this is nearly always the layer that failed.

The ETH price

“Ethereum is down 8% today” is about the price of ETH, not the availability of the network. The two are unrelated: the chain produced every block on schedule through every crash in its history. This page does not track price.

Questions people actually ask

Is Ethereum down right now?

Almost certainly not. The status at the top of this page is checked live against several independent public nodes: if they report a block with a recent timestamp, the network is producing blocks. It has not stopped since 30 July 2015.

Has Ethereum ever gone down?

No. Mainnet has never halted — not through the DAO hack, the 2016 DoS campaign, Black Thursday, a client-caused chain split, or the switch to proof of stake. The full record is above.

What is Ethereum's uptime percentage?

100%, measured as block production, from genesis to today — more than a decade of block production, across thousands of consecutive days, with no scheduled maintenance window in that period.

Why do people say Ethereum is down when it isn't?

Because something between them and the chain failed — an L2, an RPC provider, a wallet, or an exchange. Those layers do go down, and regularly. The chain underneath them kept producing blocks.

Does “Ethereum is down” mean the price is falling?

Often, and it's a different question entirely. ETH's price moves constantly and says nothing about whether the network is running. This page measures block production and finality, not price.

Has Ethereum ever stopped finalising?

Yes, twice, on 11 and 12 May 2023, for roughly 25 and 64 minutes. Blocks kept coming and transactions kept clearing, but the strongest settlement guarantee lapsed. It recovered without a coordinated restart.

How does Ethereum's uptime compare to Solana's?

Solana has halted around seven times and needed coordinated validator restarts, the longest roughly 19 hours in February 2023. Ethereum has never halted and has never needed a restart. Bitcoin has also never halted.

Do Ethereum upgrades cause downtime?

No. Forks happen on the live network with no maintenance window. The Merge switched consensus mechanisms entirely with zero seconds of downtime; Dencun and Pectra were the same.

How this page measures things.

Every number here is checked in your browser, against public nodes, with no server in between.

“Producing blocks”

A public Ethereum node reports a block with a recent timestamp. This is the only claim on the page checked live, and it is checked against several independent nodes in turn.

“Finalizing”

The beacon chain's last finalized epoch is within the usual two-epoch lag of the head. When that gap widens, the chain still produces blocks but the strongest settlement guarantee is late — exactly what happened in May 2023.

If this page can't reach a node

That is this page being down, not the chain. Same for your wallet, your RPC provider, and your exchange. The distinction is the entire point.
